In 1995, Columbia University awarded a joint venture construction management contract to the Velez Organization for Center for Disease Prevention at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. The $65 million Center for Disease Prevention rises seven stories at St. Nicholas Avenue and 168th Street across Broadway in the Washington Heights section of New York City. The CDP is a 170,000 gross-square-foot structure, containing 100,000 square feet of new laboratories, 38,500 square feet of mechanical equipment, storage and circulation space, an 18,000 below grade concrete parking level for 40 cars, 10,000 square feet of lobby and support spaces, 6,000 square feet of first floor retail space; and a 2,500 square foot conference center. Exterior features include precast concrete panels, gray-green curtain wall, aluminum framed fronts and metal panels, fixed aluminum framed windows, a central HVAC system, and an EPDM roof. Laboratory finishes consist of sheet vinyl floors, gypsum walls, and acoustical ceilings. Lobby and support space features include terrazzo floors, plaster walls, and a steel perforated ceiling.
